Yorktown Baptist Church
It was on March 21, 1883, that a group of Christian leaders from Plateau organized the “Three Mile Creek Baptist Church.” Rev. Frank Peterson pastored them. Years later, the church was renamed to “New Hope” Baptist Church, then later to Yorktown Baptist Church.
Since that time, the church has been a crucial connector between the community's religious and educational life. Mobile County Training School in particular has a long connected history here.
In 1915, a fire destroyed the Training School building. It was Yorktown Baptist Church who provided a place for students to continue their education. It occurred again in 1939, when another fire destroyed the school: Yorktown offered their facilities for Grade 5-7 students. As part of the partnership, MCTS students were required to attend Sunday school every week and get their "punch card," which verified their presence in Sunday school. It would be checked at school every Monday!
